Project based on the study of ‘Black Fish’
One of many animals on the endangered species list is the tiger. The tiger has nine subspecies. Three of these are already extinct. The historical range of tigers across Asia is now smaller. The three tiger subspecies that have gone extinct are,
The Bali Tiger,
The Caspian Tiger,
And The Javan Tiger
The tiger subspecies i have chose to research is the Malayan Tiger. The Malayan Tiger is only found around the Malayan Peninsula which is where the name comes from. This is the newest species of tiger to be found as it has only been recognized as a subspecies since 2004. They are the smallest in size of all the species of tigers. The main food source for these tigers are deer and livestock. There are only about 500 Malayan Tigers level in the wild so their population is extremely low.To help increase the number of Malayan Tigers there is a huge breeding facility in Malaysia. In the past years they have been successful with breeding of several Malayan tigers. Their cubs have been sent to various zoos around the world to help keep them safe.
The Malayan Tiger’s natural habitat is in the Malayan Peninsula of Southeast Asia, particularly in the southern and central parts of the country.this is long, narrow mainland extending south for a distance of about 700 miles. Its central mountain range divides the peninsula. The western coast is exposed to the southwest monsoons and the eastern coast to the northeast monsoons.
The Malayan tiger is now going extinct Why? Humans and human activities are constitute threats to the Malaysian tiger. When deprived from wild animals, tigers will attack domestic stock, leading to farmers hunting them in turn. Poachers continuously hunt these tigers for their pelts and body parts. Traditional Chinese and Vietnamese medicines rely heavily on tigers, and it is now thought that organized crime is behind local poaching, making the problem even more difficult to eliminate. Also villagers eat tiger meat. There are 500 Malayan tigers left in the world. 54 of them are in American zoos and there is 150 Malayan tigers in north America.
The reason i picked the Malayan tiger is because they are the newest subspecies recently found.. Even though there was once 9 subspecies of tigers and 3 have gone extinct the Malayan tiger not only is the newest subspecies but is now also going extinct after only 12 years of being found. I think more Malayan tigers should be released into the wild and not kept in zoos as the could have longer lifespans. Also there should be heavier barriers and laws put into place that count stop hunting and pouching any subspecies of tiger.
